From an adult’s point of view, Sona Sharma, Looking After the Planet, represented a lovely Friday evening’s reading. Not too heavy, not too long (120 pages) and something I could relax into and just read.
Of course I’m always looking at books from my primary teacher’s perspective which brings me onto how I imagine a child may see this book.
I would say that Sona Sharma, Looking After the Planet would suit a child of 7-9 years old. It’s not too long or taxing and would build their reading confidence.
Aside from this, there is so much more that the book has to offer. It is set in the colourful, vibrant country of India and the author Chitra Soundar paints a picture for the reader that allows the colour and culture to spring out. I almost felt I was in India whilst I was reading it. The reader will learn so much about life in India such as what a kolam is and how they’re made. The author also explores the tight knit family community that is so lacking in the U.K.
The main storyline focuses on Sona’s extreme powerful will to change her community in order for them to see the importance of climate change. The author explores the lengths she goes to to ensure her voice is heard- for better or worse!
I urge you to read this book- so much can be learnt here
